LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY TEAMS
Reports on 2015/16 Season
This year sees entries in the following catagories
LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY SQUASH AND RACKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013/2014
The Lincolnshire County Squash Championships were held over two weekends during 2014, with sponsorship from Moore Thompson Chartered Accountants, both weekends were staged at Boston Squash and Racketball Club.
The first set of County Championships were staged on 5 October 2013, the intention initially to have the mens and ladies championships over the same weekend. However a disappointing entry in both the mens and womens event meant that it was decided to stage the age group championships only that weekend and defer the mens and womens until a weekend in January.
The mens over 35 Championships were missing both last year’s champion, Mark Hildred and runner up, Dean Hiatt, Mark deciding to concentrate on his age group on the over 45’s and the number one seed Dean Hiatt unfortunately having to withdraw injured on the day before the event. This promoted Market Deeping’s, Jon Hand to number one seed and he cruised through to the final with a semi final victory over Jake Fountain 11-6, 11-0, 11-4. In a tight all Boston semi final Ady Procter the number two seed defeated Graham Wallis 12-10, 3-11, 11-8, 11-7 to go through to challenge Jon Hand, who had also won the title in 2011/12. Jon proved too strong in the final defeating Ady 11-5, 13-11, 12-10, with Graham Wallis defeating Jake Fountain by three games to one to take third place.
The over 45 event saw a comprehensive semi final victory for defending champion, Mark Hildred, over John Secker 9-4, 9-0, 9-2, fellow Bostonian David Stones defeated Steve Bell from Lincoln 5-9, 9-6, 9-4, 10-8 to set up an all Boston final between the county number one and two over 45 players. Mark proved too strong winning the final 9-2, 9-2, 9-3.
However Dave comprehensively won his own section and retained his own county title beating Mark Davies from Stamford 9-4, 9-2, 9-3.
Despite putting the mens and ladies championships back to a further weekend in January 2014, once again the entries were disappointing. In the ladies event the much anticipated final between Fran Wallis and Lisa Tamplin did not happen with Fran having to scratch through injury, however at the last minute Nicola Reece from Horncastle agreed to enter so at least there was a competitive ladies final. Nicola put up a good show in the final but Lisa showed all of her court class and experience to retain her title 11-6, 11-5, 11-9.
In the main mens County Championships, unfortunately the county’s best two players Adam Auckland from Grimsby and Martin Gibson from Grantham were unavailable. In the semi finals over 45 champion, Mark Hildred, defeated Adam Johnston from Grimsby 14-12, 11-8, 11-7 whilst Harry Falconer from Grimsby defeated Dominic Price from Horncastle 11-9, 11-4, 11-6. This set up a classic final between age and youth, an England over 45 international, Mark Hildred, against an England junior international, Harry Falconer, with what must be a record age gap between finalists, of 34 years.
The game was however a quality match and a fitting climax to the tournament, with Hildred’s shots and tight squash prevailing in the first game 11-8. However youth gradually took over and whist always close, Falconer never really looked back to win the next three games 11-7; 11-7, 11-6 to win his first ever County Championship.
In the plate event Jason Hasland beat Jason Green in an all Boston final 11-7, 9-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3.
The weekend also incorporated the Racketball championships which had previously been scheduled to be played in Lincoln in September, again cancelled due to a disappointing entry. Defending champion Clyde Finch was the only non Boston entry in the tournament and he fought his way through to the final with wins over Simon Jackson and John Secker. Ady Proctor from Boston, the number two seed, progressed to the final with a bye and a semi final win against club colleague Hedley Muscroft. The final was a classic with Proctor avenging last year’s defeat by winning his first Racketball County Championship 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-7, saving match ball in the process.
